Embracing Sustainability: Maple Grove’s Environmental Initiatives

Maple Grove is actively implementing programs to enhance environmental sustainability and community well-being.

Water Efficiency Rebate Program

To promote water conservation, the city offers rebates to residents who replace older appliances and fixtures with water-efficient models. This initiative, funded by the Metropolitan Council and local matching funds, encourages the adoption of products certified by WaterSense® and ENERGY STAR®. Eligible purchases made between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, qualify for rebates, which are applied as credits to utility bills. Applications must be submitted by July 14, 2026. Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are issued as utility bill credits applied on a quarterly basis.

Organics Recycling and Composting

Starting in 2025, Maple Grove will provide curbside organics recycling collection. Republic Services will manage the collection, and residents will be charged through their utility bills. This program aims to reduce food waste reaching landfills. Additionally, residents are encouraged to practice backyard composting, which, although limited to fewer items, offers significant environmental benefits.

Water Quality Monitoring

The city conducts regular water quality monitoring to ensure safe drinking water. Monthly tests are performed at various locations, and the Minnesota Health Department conducts a comprehensive system test every 18 months. To date, all test results comply with recommended guidelines, meeting or exceeding the State of Minnesota’s Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.

Community Engagement

Local organizations like the Fish Lake Area Residents Association (FLARA) play a vital role in environmental stewardship. FLARA has invested over $600,000 in projects from 2016 to 2023, collaborating with entities such as the Three Rivers Park District and the City of Maple Grove to enhance the environmental health of Fish Lake.

These initiatives reflect Maple Grove’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, fostering a healthier community for current and future residents.
